The Summer is here and we have enjoyed (some of us) the spring with all its bloom and gloom. The beauty of new foliage everywhere also bring a sneeze as pollens scatter here and near.

The beauty of nature is all around us as we wake up to the chirping of birds singing.
The State of New Jersey is very active in preserving land and wildlife.

I received the County Bell-a quarterly newsletter, issued by the
Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders-and was reading some of the links for nature centers in this South Jersey area. It is a very informative newsletters that
also have a large list of the county's activities; highlighting the arts, history, parks, and tourism in Burlington County.
Due to the economic crunch, it is unfortunate that some of the parks in New Jersey, will be closed to cut state deficeits. Perhaps it will be a temporary fix. There must be another way to cut expenses. With the gas prices being so high, the parks might be the only place for many of us to go.

I am very concern about the preservation of land for all of our animals.
With so much building, I don't think there is enough understanding of the habitat
of many animals who have lived here for centuries.

Now that we are in a economical crunch, maybe some of the building and occupation of large amounts of land will stop.
With gas and feul prices so high, perhaps this is the opportunity to focus
on better and healthy alternatives and enjoy life a little more.

We can apply new knowledge and understanding to our everyday lives by visiting
your local nature center or any nature center.
We can all educate others and be an advocate for the preservation of earth by changing first, the way we think and than by practicing what you know is good for you, your family, and the earth.

Coordinating a Music Alumni Group

Being the coordinator of a Music Alumni Group can be fun and inspiring.
We lost our teacher, Mr. Curtis Harmon over a year ago, and now some of
his former students have organized an Alumni Association in his honor.

Mr. Harmon taught piano Jazz Techniques, but also taught voice and studies in other musical instruments. He taught at Temple University
for over 30 years and he, himself was a study in disciplines of Jazz. He was one of the best teachers in the jazz studies. In the Temple University Musical Prep class I was in, he would play and demonstrate the piano techniques that I could absorb and use in my music. Every student have their own reasons for studying piano. As a songwriter, I wanted to know more about music as well as to be able to play. Today, a musician need to be able to do both. If you are booked for a show, and your piano player is held up somewhere, the show will still go on.

I chose to be the coordinator of the alumni group and see much success already in our musical group being positive and supportive while pursuing their individual musical studies and performances in music.

May 4, we had our second meeting at the African-American Museum in their auditorium. We started off with musical performance of three of the alumni members on the museum's grand piano! They all performed
so well that I know if Mr. Harmon was here, he would be so proud.

We are grateful to the museum letting us use their facility to have this meeting.
We accomplished a lot during this meeting and I will blog more about
how I directed the meeting.

If you are in the area of the African-American Museum, they have an
exhibit about the Negro League Baseball Greats (I see it ended May 4) There are postcards and posters that you can purchase still.

They also have on exhibit Warm Spirits: Contemporary African American Quilters. This exhibit will be there until June 1, 2008
You will also see there now until June 1, 2008 the exhibit of Lois Mailou Jones:Prints and Works on Paper.

If you want to know more about the African American Museum, you can call: 215-574-0380 The have on-going workshops and scheduled
performance. There is discounted parking in the back of the museum
and membership subscriptions for you and your family.

Alumni associations and other organizations can organize to support the community in many ways. You, too, can support the already established organizations in your community, while building your organization.

6. Place it toward a family trip you've always wanted to go on. You can
plan a group trip with friends and family where you would save on the cost and receive group rates.
7. Pay down your credit cards. You'll sleep better at night with this one!
8. Pay an extra mortgage payment; thereby, reducing your interest.
9. Buy a good bike to start saving on transportation; especially if your job is only 2-3 miles away. I heard today, that this is France's major mode of transportation.
10. Christmas shop early and buy on sale; buy in bulk at the wholesale stores such as : Sams Club, Costco, and JB Wholesale.

Money come, and money go, but at least your money will go towards something that could mean a lot more to you later. It starts with a plan.
